Polartec fabric technology reduces fiber shedding

American brush fabric manufacturer Polartec has developed its first fabric technology that reduces fiber shedding.

The company says its new PolartecPowerAir compresses fluffy fibers in a multi-layer continuous yarn fabric that provides advanced insulation efficiency and fiber shedding five times less than other premium "middle" fabrics.

Traditionally, core body temperature can be effectively adjusted by maintaining a warm air bulky or high-pile knit structure of insulating material.

However, any exposed fibers are easily peeled off due to normal wear and tear. But Polartec PowerAir construction technology mitigates this effect by wrapping insulated bulky fibers during the weaving process.

Polartec CEO Gary Smith said: "By using the efficiency of compressed air to protect bulky fibers, PolartecPowerAir will greatly improve the versatility, comfort and sustainability of the fabric life cycle."

While the original inspiration for the new fabric is to create a more environmentally friendly structure, this innovation can also achieve greater design versatility and unique visual features. The initial version of the internal mesh structure is different from the bubblebubblewrap, which maintains air and increases breathability while the other side has a smooth and durable outer surface that resists fluffing and minimizes drag.

The company said the innovation is a fundamental technology platform that will eventually be applied to all garments to reduce fiber shedding, including warmth, ultra-light skin-friendly and extreme weather protection.

Mike Rose, vice president of product development at Polartec, said: "Polartec has never avoided the thorny issue. Since the development of technology for fabrics made of PET bottles, PowerAir has the potential to become one of our most important developments."
